If you Normal or Special Summon a non-Token Normal Monster(s) (except during the Damage Step): You can draw 1 card. When an attack is declared involving an opponent's monster and a monster you control that is a Level 5 or higher Normal Monster, or was Ritual Summoned using a Normal Monster, or was Fusion, Synchro, or Xyz Summoned using a Normal Monster as material: You can make that monster you control gain ATK equal to that opponent's monster's ATK, until the end of this turn. You can only use each effect of "Piercing the Darkness" once per turn.
Piercing the Darkness — Power Evaluation
Final Score: 53 ± 6 · Confidence: Medium
- Intrinsic: 49 · Deck: 55 · Meta: provisional
- Primary role: Utility · Secondary: Resource/Recursion
Why it scores here
Piercing the Darkness earns its score as a steady draw engine for Normal Monster archetypes: its first effect fires nearly every turn in dedicated Blue-Eyes, Dark Magician, or Red-Eyes decks, generating a reliable +1 in card advantage at no additional cost. High ATK, DEF, and rarity do not factor into the score — the value comes entirely from that consistent draw trigger and the bonus ATK-equalization battle trick of the second effect, which prevents large Normal Monster-derived boards from being run over in combat. The card's presence across 61 distinct archetypes confirms strong within-niche applicability, but the complete absence of combo data and Continuous Spell vulnerability to backrow removal keep the score in the mid-range.
Axis scores
| Axis | Score | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Accessibility | 45 | No dedicated searcher is cited in the evidence; the card must be drawn naturally and is run at 1–2 copies in most decks (1 copy in 274 of 400 decks, 2 in 102), making it reliably live but not guaranteed in the opening hand. (verified) |
| Combo & Conversion | 40 | Zero combo appearances prevent direct measurement; by card text the draw effect fires each turn a Normal Monster is Normal or Special Summoned, adding consistent but modest card advantage without building an immediate board. (inferred) |
| Resource Economy | 72 | Effect 1 draws 1 card on each Normal or Special Summon of a non-Token Normal Monster (OPT), providing roughly +1 per turn in Normal Monster-heavy homes such as Dark Magician (77 decks, 19.2%) and Blue-Eyes (51 decks, 12.8%). (observed) |
| Effect & Interaction | 28 | Effect 2 grants the attacking Normal Monster-linked monster ATK equal to the opponent's attacking monster's ATK until end of turn — a reactive battle trick that averts being run over in combat, but provides no hard disruption of opponent spells or effects. (verified) |
| Material Utility | 5 | As a Continuous Spell Card, Piercing the Darkness provides no monster body and cannot serve as Fusion, Synchro, Xyz, or Link material of any kind. (verified) |
| Resilience & Flexibility | 42 | As a face-up Continuous Spell it is vulnerable to standard S/T removal (MST, Cosmic Cyclone); however both effects operate across both players' turns, offering multi-turn utility while the card remains on the field. (inferred) |
| Deck-Building Efficiency | 65 | Run at an average of 1.38 copies across 400 Normal Monster decks spanning 61 distinct archetypes, with no deckbuilding restriction imposed, making it a low-cost, clean tech slot for any Normal Monster strategy. (observed) |
Calculation
Weight profile: 1.0 Utility/no clear role. Intrinsic ≈ 49, Deck ≈ 55, Meta = provisional. Modifiers: none. Final formula: 0.40*Intrinsic + 0.60*Deck
Strengths
- Reliable draw engine that fires every turn a Normal Monster is Normal or Special Summoned, generating consistent +1 card advantage
- Applicable across 61+ distinct archetypes including Blue-Eyes, Dark Magician, Red-Eyes, and Primite
- Second effect provides free ATK-equalization during battle, protecting high-level Normal Monster-derived boards from being run over
- No deckbuilding restriction or lock imposed on the user
Weaknesses
- Continuous Spell is vulnerable to backrow removal (Mystical Space Typhoon, Cosmic Cyclone, Night Beam)
- Both effects are once per turn, preventing explosive or repeated use in the same turn
- Draw effect requires a Normal or Special Summon of a non-Token Normal Monster; the card is effectively bricked without prior summon access
- Battle-trick effect is highly situational and requires an attack declaration with matching conditions to activate
Counters / choke points
- Mystical Space Typhoon / Cosmic Cyclone (destroy the Continuous Spell before draw triggers)
- Effect Veiler / Infinite Impermanence (negate the triggered effect on the summoned Normal Monster)
- Cards or effects that prevent Normal Monster summons or skip the Battle Phase entirely
Best use
Continuous draw engine providing +1 per turn and battle-protection for Normal Monster-centric strategies. Decks: Dark Magician, Blue-Eyes, Red-Eyes, Primite, Gunkan. Suggested copies: 2.
Evidence & gaps
- Verified: Continuous Spell Card with two separate OPT effects; Effect 1: draw 1 on Normal or Special Summon of non-Token Normal Monster (not during Damage Step); Effect 2: ATK-equalization battle trick for Level 5+ Normal Monsters, or Ritual/Fusion/Synchro/Xyz made with a Normal Monster as material; Appears across 61 distinct archetypes in 400 matched Normal Monster decks; Average 1.38 copies per deck; most commonly run at 1 copy (274 of 400 decks)
- Observed: Top archetypes by deck count: Dark Magician 19.2% (77 decks), Blue-Eyes 12.8% (51 decks), Primite 11% (44 decks), Red-Eyes 7.5% (30 decks); Frequently co-appears with Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring (64.5%) and Called by the Grave (60%) as staple accompaniments; usage_statistics shows 100% inclusion at 2 copies in Time Thief and 66.7% inclusion at 2 copies in Gunkan
- Inferred: Draw effect fires nearly every turn in Normal Monster-heavy decks, providing consistent incremental card advantage; Battle-trick effect primarily functions as insurance against being run over in combat rather than as a win condition
- Data gaps: No combos supplied — combo_conversion and practical effect_interaction are text-only inference No banlist token — assumed 3 copies (unlimited) usage_statistics covers only 2 archetypes (Time Thief, Gunkan) despite 61 archetypes in deck evidence, leaving broader historical inclusion data absent
